Authentic Madurai Mutton Kuzhambu with Manakkadu Masala Mutton Masala

Madurai Mutton Kuzhambu is a rich and flavorful South Indian curry famous for its spicy taste, aromatic spices, and thick gravy. Prepared with Manakkadu Masala Mutton Masala, this recipe delivers the authentic taste of Madurai-style home cooking.

Ingredients

  • 500 g mutton, cleaned and cut into pieces
  • 2 tbsp Manakkadu Masala Mutton Masala
  • 1 tsp Manakkadu Masala Red Chilli Powder
  • ¼ tsp Manakkadu Masala Turmeric Powder
  • 1 tsp Manakkadu Masala Black Pepper Powder
  • 2 large onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 1 cup grated coconut (or coconut paste)
  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
  • 3 cups water

Preparation Method

Step 1: Marinate the Mutton

In a bowl, combine:

  • Mutton pieces
  • 1 tbsp Manakkadu Masala Mutton Masala
  • ½ tsp Manakkadu Masala Red Chilli Powder
  • Manakkadu Masala Turmeric Powder
  • Salt

Mix well and marinate for 30 minutes.

Step 2: Cook the Mutton

Transfer the marinated mutton to a pressure cooker.

Add 2 cups water and cook for 5–6 whistles or until the mutton becomes tender.

Reserve the cooked mutton along with the stock.

Step 3: Prepare the Kuzhambu Base

Heat oil in a kadai or heavy-bottomed vessel.

Add curry leaves and onions. Sauté until golden brown.

Add ginger-garlic paste and cook until aromatic.

Add tomatoes and cook until soft and mushy.

Step 4: Add the Masalas

Add:

  • Remaining 1 tbsp Manakkadu Masala Mutton Masala
  • Remaining ½ tsp Manakkadu Masala Red Chilli Powder
  • Manakkadu Masala Black Pepper Powder

Cook until the masala becomes fragrant and oil starts separating.

Step 5: Prepare the Gravy

Add the cooked mutton along with its stock.

Mix well and simmer for 10 minutes.

Add coconut paste and enough water to achieve the desired consistency.

Cook on low flame for another 10–15 minutes until the gravy thickens and the flavors blend perfectly.

Step 6: Final Touch

Adjust salt if needed.

Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and curry leaves.

Serve hot.
